The temperature was only in the 50s on May 16, 1970, which probably explains why the women are wearing wool suits and have their hands in their pockets and why the boy in the foreground without a jacket appears to be shivering. A colleague of my father’s was visiting from Chicago with his family and my father took them to Fenway Park, one of his favorite places in all of Boston. My mother’s notes record that the Red Sox defeated the Cleveland Indians that day, 7-2. This photo documents how dressed up people got to go to ballgames fifty years ago and how somber their attire was.
