I love this picture of my mother, taken about four months after the birth of my middle sister. When I saw this slide, I immediately remembered that blue dress, and in particular the buttons arranged in groups of three. When I was feeling shy as a toddler, I would hide my face in my mother’s skirts and play with the buttons. My favorite of her dresses was one that had tiny rhinestone buttons. I thought they were real diamonds.
